So what make/model do you'all recommend for a replacment?

Kensington's Expert Mouse Rules All With an Iron Hand. All other mice are it's biyatch.

The latest version has an all-optical sensor system, no rollers to absorb peanut butter, no interruptor wheels to gather fur, hermetically sealed ball cage.

Sweet piece of hardware, for all it looks like a Klingon prop from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. I've got older mechanical versions, they're real 'pry them from my cold, dead fingers' devices for me.

OH MY GAWD, I get to disagree with Bruce. I have never been a fan of trackballs. Clicking and holding to drag and draw, even reprogramming a button, just never felt right. I guess it depends upon what you are doing, but to each there own.

Discussions about input device preferences SHOULD have more passion and flammability than some of the recent discussions here.

It's for my Smurf.

If wireless, ... do those generic USB-RFWireless stubs work on a Mac, or do they have to be Mac-specific? How fast do the mice go thru batteries?

Most work just fine, as far as I've seen. USB Overdrive probably runs any not immediately recognized. The mice are pretty long lived on batteries.

The MS mouse I mentioned included the receiver and a driver, so USB overdrive was not necessary.

The receiver is also near my D-Link DWL 810 802.11b adapter and causes no interference.
