Wasn´t there a way to reset the logic board via Open Firmware?

If I can remember, it was command+option+O+F then it leads you to the open firmware screen (kinda a Unix terminal) in which you could just type "reset all" and enter...

The failing memory card also sounds to me... But if you could get even to the first part of the installer (up to the agreeement text and so and so) I assume there would not be a matter of misplaced cards but maybe an error either on the memory, or on the reading of the installer disc. I´d also suggest to try with another CD unit, if possible...

Now I'm off to read the seller the riot act...
Try stripping out all cards and all but one stick of ram. You may have a bad stick, you could have more than one bad stick, or it could (and very likely is) something altogether unrelated to ram. See if you can get your hands on an Apple Hardware Test disk for that specific machine. Go slow on yellin at the seller. There's plenty of room for them to be acting in error rather than falsely. I sell a lot of stuff and (though I've had plenty of occasions when I was in error) I have had some buyers really embarrass themselves by reacting in haste. Also, try re-setting the logic board. I don't remember if the DA has a cuda switch, but most model have some routine for re- setting
the logic board.
