Hi Bruce;
One thing that I have run into when doing upgrades, and security
patches. They have a NASTY (as far as I'm concerned) habit of reseting
preferences to whatever APPLE thinks is the right setting. I.E. sleep
settings, on the Power Saver pane.

On a couple occasions he (or someone walking past his office) has
heard an odd noise coming from it, described as "the sound a phone
makes when it's off the hook too long".
The one time it happened when he was there it was not accompanied by
any alert or other notification in the Finder, though it's possible he
missed it (he's in the throes of switching from OS 9 to OS X)
He's not running iCal or any other scheduling program that would have
an alarm.
