A faculty member (my last OS 9 holdout!) finally upgraded his
beige G3-266 to a spanking new G5 tower.
On a couple occasions he (or someone walking past his office) has
heard an odd noise coming from it, described as "the sound a phone
makes when it's off the hook too long".
The one time it happened when he was there it was not accompanied
by any alert or other notification in the Finder, though it's
possible he missed it (he's in the throes of switching from OS 9
to OS X)
He's not running iCal or any other scheduling program that would
have an alarm.
A couple of really stupid thoughts, but I thought I would throw
them out.
Did the user (not you Bruce!!) plug the ethernet port into the
modem jack on their desk phone?
Nope. It does have an internal modem, but it's not connected to
anything. It WAS set as the first internet device to try, but if it
was trying to connect and couldn't, there should have been an
Internet Connect alert on the desktop I would think. I'm pretty
certain the fast beep you get from an off-hook phone is done by the
phone company, so unless the modem is emulating that it shouldn't
make that noise.
Could it just be the fans ramping up, since the beige had a
constantly on fan?
Possibly, haven't heard them, but it seems to be happening when the
computer *isnt* busy.
Bad CD/DVD in the drive that the system starts and stops reading from?
No disk in the drive.
Thanks for the ideas...
