My B&W G3 won't boot to the startup manager when I hold down the option key when the machine boots.
Not supported.
just looking for a quick way to boot to a separate hard drive when I turn on the machine
Use opt-cmd-shift-DELETE. It makes the Mac skip the preset boot then use the standard seek sequence to find another bootable system. If you keep holding down those keys, then it will keep skipping (to pass over multiple boots).
New-World Mac Boot Options: cmd-opt-o-f Enter Open Firmware's command mode. X Force OS X boot. C Boot from a CD. N Boot from a compatible network server (NetBoot). T FireWire Target Disk mode opt-cmd-shift-DELETE Bypass primary startup volume and seek. cmd-V Verbose mode. cmd-S Single-User mode. shift Safe Mode (disa non-essential kernel exts).
