``I am trying to help my sister-in-law with her monitor settings on a B&W
running 10.3.9 and running into a small snag.

The only display resolution she is seeing is 640 x 480. There are no
other resolutions shown in the Displays panel of System Preferences.

I had her run System Profiler and the only ID on the video card she
could give me was:
ATY GT-C
and it has 4MB of memory.

She really needs to get the resolution up to at least 832 x 632, if not
1024 x 768.

We tried setting the colors to thousands, but still no additional
resolutions show up.

Is a 4MB card enough to run at higher settings than 640 x 480 or am I
going to have to get her a better card?

I also thought X could not run at 640 x 480, am I wrong?

Yes, it will run, but some of the necessary parts of dialog boxes will be cut
off.

BTW, that return value code for the card is for a card with the earlier Rage Pro chipset, not the usual Rage 128 that those machines came with. Could that
be part of the problem?

It probably is an earlier card. It is a cobbled together system from the school she works at. But still, shouldn't a 4 meg video card be able to drive a monitor at higher than 640 x 480? I have a beige at work with only the stock 2MB vram that can drive a 16" Apple monitor at 832 x 624.

What monitor is she using? Some of the older Apple monitors require an adaptor for the VGA output on the ATI card that mimics the ADB controls that are used
to set the resolution, like the AppleVision 1710.

It is a newer Sony 17" that I had been using at work as a monitor while setting up various machines and it supports up to 1600 x 1200 (not really useful at 17", but at least I know the video card drivers are properly installed).

It just struck me, maybe there is a Mac to vga adapter on the card that she did not tell me about and that has a 640 x 480 limit. She might not have realized that there is one when she told me how many rows of pins were where the monitor plugs in.

Did the older Rage Pro cards have a VGA or Mac video connector on them?
