>Are the B&W G3's subject to the 8 gig rule for OS X?

No, no machine which has built-in USB (Lombard) or built-in USB and
Firewire (Pismo and B&W), and all later, are subject to this restriction.

Beige and Wallstreet were the last with this restriction.

My Wallstreets and Beiges have an 8 GB boot partition, and then the rest
of the drive as a second partition; my Lombard, Pismo and B&Ws have the
entire drive (60 GB or 120 GB) for the boot partition.

Note that for compatibility reasons there are other restrictions on
drives, such as 128 GB on an EIDE or UDMA bus, and that this restriction
applies to both "Old World" (pre-USB) and "New World" (post-USB, but
pre-"Mirror Door") machines.

This restriction can be gotten around using Intech's drive initializer,
where you set the first partition to be precisely 127.99 GB, and the rest
of the drive whatever what you want it to.

A drive which is so initialized under OS 9 will work on pre-X as well as
X in precisely the same way, and it it NOT necessary to use a UATA/133
card to get around the 128 GB limit.

On X, you must install Intech's "high capacity" drive patch, however.

Intech's doc on its initializer (which is executed under 9) and its patch
(which only applies to X) is quite thorough, and if used according to its
instructions, you can have full use of a, say, 500 GB drive on both 9 and
X, all with complete transparency.

Both my production B&Ws now have 300 GB drives on the "multiword" bus,
for "scratch" storage during DVD/CD authoring.

I also store my periodic backups there, too.
