Hi Diane,
Yes there are actually plenty of PCI and PC Cards that are actually
compliant with Airport. The trick is to look for any card that has a
Broadcom chipset in it (I use a Motorola WPC1810GV2 PCI card, for example).
Airport recognizes these cards quite easily as Airport Extreme compatible,
and many do not even need the help of 3rd-party drivers.
Some do need drivers, such as IOExpert's 802.11b Driver, found at:

http://www.ioxperts.com/products/80211b_X.html

The site lists a bunch of compatible cards that have been tested to
"known-to-work" with their driver.
Once upon a time some site posted a rather large list of PC vendor cards
that actually worked with Macs, both Airport-only and 3rd party
driver-enabled, but I can't find it straight out. Maybe somebody else can
assist; but at least be assured that there is hope, Diane!

Best regards,
Dana
