Check to see if your Mac will support dual processors, directions are

If it will you can put in a Dual 500 G4 from a Gig-E Mac, probably
cost less than $50. It's a simpler swap and it will let you run up to
OS X 10.4.11 nicely (especially if you max out your RAM). I have one
running 10.5.4 but it's pretty slow, I think 10.4.11 would really be
the best system for the DP 500.
If you want to go faster the Sonnet 1 GHz single is easy to install
and will support Leopard, but expect to pay around $175.
