Open source editors are few and far between on OS neXt. Some folks use emacs 
and X11.

Bare Bones software offers BBEdit for a significant fee but there is a free - 
and emasculated - version called Text Wrangler.

The full version offers an MPW like "worksheet" that allows shell commands to 
be executed by selecting and poking the ENTER key. It's somewhat like Apple's 
Macintosh Programmers Workshop for Mac OS 9 and below.

C++ is usable but it's hard, or perhaps impossible, to get to Apple's 
frameworks that way. Objective C is the language of choice.  But then cc works 
fine for stuff that doesn't need access to Apple's GUI stuff.
