I've put four 500 GB drives in such a machine, with two of these on
the optical bus.

The machine doesn't appreciate not having an optical drive, although
there are some circumventions.

Two or three very large drives (750 GB is the largest PATA drive
presently being made) is perfectly fine, and will cause no problems.

In my applications, the very large drive which is on the optical bus,
in place of the Zip drive, us used for backups of works in progress.
