Under Tiger, I decided to brave getting rid of the System > Library >
Extensions> AppleMaceEthernet.kext in an effort to rid my system of
trying to connect (or simply acknowledge) a fried on-board ethernet
port (en0) (associated with the terminology "Mace").

The Network > Network Port Configurations > "Built-in ethernet" is
now grayed out. Startup seems to be smoother as far as my Asanté
DECchip 21140 getting its (en1) attention as solo ethernet route (no
(en0) shows up now in Network Utility). It is acknowledged, assigned
an ethernet address, and is set as PASS in the log.

In particular:

Oct 7 10:09:34 localhost kernel[0]: DEC21x4: Ethernet address
00:00:94:a1:d1:c2

and

Oct 7 10:09:38 localhost kernel[0]: DEC21x4: 10BaseT Link PASS

Although there still seems to be some issues (continuing working on
reading the logs).

I also thought I might need to get rid of something (Apple related
kext-s) in IONetworkingFamily.kext such as AppleGMACEthernet.kext and/
or AppleBMacEthernet.kext, but I have left them alone at present. The
Asanté chip has its own kext: Apple_DEC21x4Ethernet.kext, as do
several other chips.

For my information: how do I get the AppleMaceEthernet.kext back into
the Extensions folder? After making sure the Permissions was returned
to system Read & Write and wheel Read Only, as the others around it
are, I can copy it into the Extensions folder with Authentication,
but on Startup, it says it was installed improperly and cannot be
used. Even after I Repair Permissions.

I believe my Asanté 10/100 PCI card is connecting on Startup, and the
on-board ethernet is being left alone ... but I am continuing to
observe its behavior over the next few Startups.

I feel this is an interesting topic, at least for those of us who
have fried ethernet ports on the mobo.

Thanks for Listening,

Bill
