My Intel iMac was the first model. A 1.83Ghz Core Duo 17".

About six weeks ago the machine stopped recognising the internal hard drive. 
Didn't even pick there was a drive physically connected.

Then about two weeks ago the machine stopped working altogether. It would turn 
on and within seconds turn off again.

If I reset the SMC the machine would power on with the fans on full pelt, but 
nothing else.
