I used the USB-PATA cable along with one of those switchable drawer type cases which were made to fit in a 5.25" PC external bay and mounted it in an external case which has it's own PS. Now when I need to test or format a HD, I simply put it in the drawer slide and pop it in. Works great. I've seen the same type cables available for USB-SATA and will be making a similar setup for SATA drives.
