Now that I've switched from my trusty G4 Quicksilver to a G5 (in order
to run Final Cut Pro), there is one thing I'm not so happy with. I
can't silence the startup chime of the G5's internal speaker like I
could with the G4. All you had to do shut up the G4 on startup was to
plug something into the speaker jack (such as speakers, although any
mini-jack would do), or plug headphones into the headphone jack,
and. . . you got blissful silence on startup.

But with this G5 (2-gig Core Duo), even with speakers plugged into the
speaker jack in back, and headphones plugged into the headphone jack
in front, and no matter whether the sound output is set to headphones
or Digital Out in the Sound prefs, I still get the startup "chime"
from the computer's internal speaker. This is a sudden sound that
wakes up people sleeping in nearby bedrooms and irritates me as well.

Anybody know how I can silence this computer's internal speaker so it
can start up silently, like my Quicksilver did?

Tom
