Interesting, Tom. The PPC G5s I've used have acted as your described G4 scenario - external device plugged into audio out loops sound out to that, and cancels internal speaker, including start up chime. Maybe it is an Intel thing? My first suggestion is to crack open the case and unplug the internal speaker from the motherboard. A pair of external speakers with volume control gives you full command of your audio needs. Just my first thought.
