Thanks Dana. This G5 is pre-Intel, 1995, so it can't have anything to
do with Intel design. But yes, this G5 has both the external and the
internal speakers working at the same time, no matter what is plugged
into any audio port. As I said, I have a pair of external speakers
plugged into the speaker port in the back of the tower, and I have a
headset plugged into the headset port on the front of it, but I still
get sound coming out of both of them AND from the internal speaker. If
I lower the volume in the Sound prefs panel, it lowers it in
everything. I just can't shut up that internal speaker.

So, I'll let a little more time pass in case someone else stops by
here with a solution, but if it turns out there's no other way to do
it, I'll open up the box and unplug the internal speaker, as you
suggest, if that's what it takes to shut it up. Not only does the
startup chime annoy everyone around here, but when I do video editing
all that sound comes out of the external speaker as well, so there's
no peace and quiet for anyone nearby.
