I've always thought this was cruel, but have you considered "parting it out"?
Recently, someone gave me a Yikes! for around $20, and shipped it to me for $30 via USPS (took forever). Its added value to me and maybe to him, was that it was being used/recycled in a musician's environment, to improve his (my) study setting. Needed new HDs, and some more RAM, a good cleaning and oc'd to 450MHz. Used his own shipping materials, to include padding using egg cartons: hey ... if they can protect eggs, they can protect Apples!
