It makes no difference how I eject the disc, if something is in the
tray it always works.  And when the tray is empty it won't  open  for
any command keyboard or mouse click that I have found.  I'm thinking
it has something to do with the software/logic that is internal to the
drive.

The drive burns and reads media fine, but it is a pain to always
remember to have a disc in the drive or you'll have to pry it open.
If I can't sort this out I'll look for a sale at Fry's and buy a
replacement drive.
