No.  Without iTunes running I can turn on/off the S10 and everything is
fine.  It actually was designed NOT to act like an external drive, that's
why iTunes was needed in order to update it.

Yes I've tried a dummy account with the same result.  I've also tried it
with a fresh install of Leopard and iTunes 8.0.2. and it's the same crash.

Everything else seems fine.  The USB port I was using works with other
devices and I even used the other USB ports as well as a USB hub connected
to another port and all gave the same crash.
