United Parcel Service (UPS) insures parcels for $100 unless the shipper buys
more insurance.
If a damage claim is filed UPS will require the original shipping container and
packing be available for their inspection to determine if the damage occurred
in transit.
Once UPS determines it was their fault, I believe they send the $100 or the
value of the merchandise if it was insured for more than $100 to the shipper.
Then you have to contact the seller/shipper to receive your compensation.
At least that is my understanding based on memory.
Many years ago I received a damaged monitor from a seller who did pack it
properly. The problem I had was extracting the purchase price from the seller
once he received payment on the claim. --glen
