I have a G4 Gigabyte (Model Name: Power Mac G4
  Model Identifier: PowerMac3,3
  Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
  Processor Speed: 1 GHz
  Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 2 MB
  Memory: 1 GB
  Bus Speed: 100 MHz
  Boot ROM Version: 4.2.8f1)
I added a fast Pioneer DVD recorder but ran into the same problem. I
had to replace the 40 wire cable with the new 80 wire. I can not
explain it but the connectors have 40 pins so it was plug and play.
Just make sure get the right length. All is well now.
