To find out what and how this Mac was when leaving the factory, you'll need
the real SerialNumber. This SerialNumber ALWAYS has 11 characters, like fe
CK745121AEJ (My old Kanga, haha! But useable to try out the link below.).
Normally it's found on a sticker with barcodes on the back of the Mac.
Finding a number like this, goto:
<http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html>
and enter your SN. Page is in English also.

So this will not be a SerialNumber like you'll need. Have a futher search
(see above).

Well, I would say:
1) Start with the SN. The cheapest and easiest way to find out what you have
in hands.
2) Then follow Bruce Johnson's advice and instructions in his reply.
3) Download with your MDD a manual for this Mac (UserManuals free from Apple
or ask on list for any).
4) Make your decisions or in case of doubt put it on list.

IMHO: Finding out before deciding is never a waste of time.
