Did you have the internet plugged in and set up when you did the
install ?

I use Debian NetInstall CD which is a small initial download and the
first thing it does is to set up the internet -- won't install by this
method if it doesn't work then and forces the setup correctly by
asking you for the info it needs if it needs.

Like the guy below says you can check with ifconfig, in fact you can
start the interface with it too.
If it checks OK already you might try the command "dhclient eth0" and
then try "ping google.com"

another thing to check is in the boot messages -- however with a
desktop installed you don't usually see like in OSX -- but in Linux
you can see by typing the command "dmesg | more" in a terminal window
-- there you can see if the card is seen at all. If not then you don't
have a driver in your kernel and you are probably in trouble. Although
sometimes for some reason there is a driver which has not loaded
(right now with my powerbook on debian I have to load the sound driver
by hand ...) ...
