You might also think about disassembling the machine to basic components and thoroughly cleaning all electronic contacts of every component. Slots, card edges, cable end connectors, ports, mobo connectors etc. I know it is a lot of work but unless you can be more specific describing the symptoms i.e. the conditions under which it did start,what drive etc it Is all I can think of. Old machines can often be stopped just by the creeping crud which interrupts circuits after years of use and thermal cycling.. Knowing the condition of the hardware is always my starting place for knowing the health of the system. Corrosion, loose connections, loose solder joint on a connector, dirty connections, broken or burned wires are common in old machines. Or is it a matter of a dying boot drive? The PSU may be involved, a hardware inspection may be revealing.
