Steve, I sent you a very long private e-mail with everything you would need to know to get your drives set up and running the way you want. Did you get it? If so, that e-mail should have laid it all out for you. I included the manufacturer's support pages showing the jumper configuration for all Seagate, Western Digital and Hitachi/IBM hard drives. I also supplied a link to a wikipedia article re ATA specifications. I also provided a narrative to use as a guide to install your drives. If you didn't get my e-mail, you should have already figured out what to do from the advice given by others in this thread. Western Digital drives have four major jumper settings; i.e., Single (Master w/o Slave present), Dual Master (Master w/Slave present), Dual Slave , and Cable select. As a general rule, if you have two HDDs in a system and both are WD, then either can be Master w/Slave and the other Slave. If you have two HDDs and one is a WD, and the other is any other brand HDD, then the WD needs to be jumpered as Master w/ Slave, and the other HDD jumpered as Slave. If you only have one HDD in your system, and it is a WD, then it must be jumpered as Master/ Single. WD HDDs in two drive systems which utilize Cable Select must have the WD (if only one drive is a WD), at the end connector of the IDE cable, with the other non-WD HDD set as Cable Select on the middle connector of the IDE cable. If both drives are WD, either may be Master w/Slave, and the other Slave, with the drives placed on the appropriate connector; i.e., Master w/Slave at the end connector, and Slave at he middle connector. If two WD drives are in the system, and you can to utilize Cable Select, either WD drive can be placed on either connector, but the default start-up drive will be the Cable Select drive on the end connector of the IDE cable. You can change the start-up drive from the Start-up Drive preference pane in System Preferences no matter what configuration your drives are in; Master/ Slave, or Cable Select. Here is a link to jumper charts: <http://tinyurl.com/nkhguy> Western Digital <http://tinyurl.com/6j9m35> Seagate and Maxtor <http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/jumpers.htm> Hitachi/IBM <http://tinyurl.com/ma6ap2> Samsung And everything you always wanted to know about PATA: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Technology_Attachment> You should check your cable in a system with two working EIDE drives to verify the cable is good. Also, make sure you are utilizing an 80- wire/40-pin cable. Try a new 80-wire/40-pin IDE cable. Make sure you have not set the capacity limiter jumper on the drives.
