I sometimes do exactly what you do, except that my step 7 usually goes
smoother.  But not only do my replies occasionally go wandering into
another thread, they may not show up for a while, or they may go for
an infinite journey in outer space.

Give the online Google Groups another try.  I was a slow adopter, and
I'm using it at the moment.  It is not so bad, really.  It is faster.
And I occasionally find that the thread has moved on in the past 12 or
18 hours, and someone else has already said what I wanted to say.
