I'm beginning to suspect the video chipset itself. Does the external video display flicker when you start up, or does the built-in LCD flicker, or do they both? Try this when you start up: As soon as it chimes, press Command, Option, O and F. Then type these commands (don't type the Return stuff in parentheses): set-defaults (then hit Return) reset-nvram (Return) reset-all (Return) Don't be surprised if the OF screen comes up, and then if the video appears normally when you hit the last Return and it chimes and boots. You may have to apply some pressure to the video chipset and do this several times. I've forgotten which iBook you've got, but I've found that G4 iBooks also suffer from the dreaded loose ball grid array video chipset solder problem that G3 dual USB iBooks are notorious for having.
