Well, you can test the back light vs screen.  With the computer off and 
the external monitor connected, shine a bright light at the laptop 
screen front.  Watch the laptop screen as you boot the computer.  If you 
see any images, they should coincide with the external monitor, the LCD 
is working and the problem is in the backlight.  If you can't see 
anything then the problem is in the LCD or video hardware.
