I worry a lot less about backing up with google than I would if the data were on one of my machines. Since moving to gmail my email is actually a lot more available to me since it's not on a single machine that I'd have to use to access it. I guess Google's servers are occasionally unavailable or, more likely, slow. But that doesn't happen often enough for me to think about managing my own email storage again. But, yes, that mess with Sidekick is the worst nightmare of anyone who uses a cloud based service. OTOH, it sounds like the Sidekick customer data loss was the proverbial "perfect storm" of incompetence and neglect.
