Hello experts! I've started two years ago with a Power Mac G4 and have learned a lot, upgraded two G4s and know now a little about system boards and different CPUs and such.
But I'm not so well with G5s. I own one though, a Dual-Core 2.0 GHz "Late 2005". I am wondering if it would be possible to do the following: - buy a Quad system board - fit my existing 2.0 GHz DC 970MP on it Would this work? The DC 2.0 system bus speed is 1.0 GHz. A Quad runs at 2.5 GHz processor speed and thus at 1.25 GHz system bus speed. How is the system bus speed set? Does it matter if only one processor is fitted, leaving the second connector free? I'd then like to grab another 2.0 GHz DC somewhere and - install a second 2.0 GHz DC 970MP on it I would thereafter get a Quad with 2.0 GHz instead of 2.5 GHz. This leaves mainly two big questions: 1) How is the system bus set? 1)a) On the processor daughter card? or 1)b) On the system board? 2) Can processors from the "Late 2005" series be interchanged? 2)a) E.g. a 2.3 GHz DC on a 2.0 GHz DC mainboard? 2)b) E.g. a 2.0 GHz DC on a 2.5 GHz DC "Quad" mainboard? Any thoughts?
