For what its worth,
PreSonus and M-Audio are your best bets for a small FW interface, esp. if
money is an issue, and if you're hoping to match the specs of your G4
PowerBook. FireWire interfaces will (always I bet) have audio connectivity
(not just MIDI) which of course ramps up the price (to $300 plus - the
cheapest I could find was a PreSonus "FireBox" for under $200-TC Electronics
makes a "Desktop Konnekt 6" for the samew price - the rest are over $300).
Since timing is an issue for MIDI, and you mentioned really targeting MIDI
use over audio, consider just trying a USB 2.0 interface to see if you like
one (they are much better than 1.1 units), and if you do, save yourself a
load of cash.
Just my 2ยข worth.

Dana
