officially and according to many of the know-it-all sites, the last
compatible version of osx would be 10.4.11. however, if you plan to
drop coin on a CPU upgrade, i would recommend a powerlogix G3/1GHz.
there are good reasons why a G4 upgrade is problematic in a B&W,
including things like being forced to cut down the bus speed of the
logic board, and other incompatibilities requiring significant work-
arounds. these are mentioned in a bit more detail on the powerlogix
product page (which you can find thru macsales.com), and can they lead
to instabilities. i have been using the PL G3/1gig upgrade in a B&W
for a year now (i wanted a faster processor in a computer that runs
OS9 apps and requires a native ADB port for a software dongle), and it
has performed flawlessly. not a single crash or conflict issue, and
it hums along pretty well for a mesozoic era beast. not all apps,
probably not even half, were ever written to exploit the vector
processing capability of the G4 altivec engine. many apps run just as
fast on a G3, and therefore the most important factor would be the
clock speed of the CPU. and with the 1gig processor, i'd say it might
be a fair gamble that it could run OS 10.5.6, since it exceeds the
867MHz cutoff. then again, it might not because it's neither a G4,
nor an apple CPU. someone on the list may have already tried this,
and could say for sure. i have not tried it, since the box i have is
dedicated to the OS9 apps, and i don't even own a copy of leopard.

best,

8^)
