Look at the IDE cable in the machine; is the HD the only connected to that cable? Or, do you have something else there.
Now that I know you have a Windows machine, why don't you take the HD out and put it in an external case, or into the windows box and check it out...make sure it's working. You can then format it in there, not as NTFS, but as DOS. And then once you know it works, we can move onto other issues, if you're still have a problem.
