You seem to be reporting two separate problems here, interleaving the
information. So things are a bit muddied. As I'm understanding it...

Problem 1:  Your mac didn't fully reboot after installing the update;
hung showing the spinning gear.

This most often occurs because Apple's installer failed to clear your
kernel cache properly before initiating the reboot. This is a
long-standing "bug" in Apple's installer. Drives me nutz. Apps like
OnyX manage to do it right, but Apple can't! grrr. Anyway... The
solution is to force the cache to be cleared and rebuilt, by booting
into Safe Mode (shift key held down), then rebooting normally.

Problem 2: Some other HDs are now r/o (read-only; padlocked).

Are they internals or externals?

Were these volumes mounted when you ran the Apple updater?

What does it say about the write-lock, when the volumes are mounted,
in your system log?

Please show me the output of these two commands, issued in Terminal:

diskutil list
ls -al /Volumes

(Just copy the two lines together, Launch Terminal, and paste 'em in
- they'll run sequentially).
