An upgrade installs the new system files over the old ones.
An Archive and Install creates a new system, then moves the old user
data and files to it.
it works perfectly well in an either direction. This is my preferred
method of upgrading a system.
In 10.6, this is the only way, although of course Apple chooses to
confuse the issue by calling it 'Upgrade'.
