Most equipment is marked for polarity. Watch out for stuff that isn't, it may be AC which doesn't usually mix well with DC.

Usually coax power connectors that fit will make electrical contact too. If the inside pin is too big the plug won't go in. If it's too small it still can go in and it will usually make contact. I don't recall ever running into one that didn't come to think of it.
