I am in a similar pickle. My iMac is getting flakey. I have a ProTools program I need regularly for work. My ProTools disc is damaged. I cannot install it on the g5 PowerMacintosh that I'm going to try to use as a replacement until I can afford something new. The latest Leopard is on both computers, though one is G5 and the other Intel Core Duo.
So, with Firewire, I'm going to try to recreate a new user on this G5, from the iMac. What could go wrong? I see advice to back up the iMac (above in this string), but I don't see why, exactly.
