As is sometimes true with a public posting, too much info and it does not get posted, too little and the reasons are not understood. At the very least, this is not a discussion about "how much I like my Mac" that was posted last week!!!!

Jonas, you sure take things to a whole new level, kindof zigzag and plaid. :)

I and some friends refurb Macs and give to poor. Now, what could happen if some perv donated a box to us and we cleaned it up and gave it to a family with young children or young adults who put it in their bedrooms or wherever?

Over the years, I have received / bought used computers that came with all sorts of odd things on the hard drives - confidential information, tax records, VERY personal diaries, and even some spyware.

Bottom line: Whenever you get your paws on a used computer or HD, ERASE the HD!

But we did not know that hidden in the various parts of the box was a spy just ready to peek!

You don't know, and you don't need to care. Just ERASE the HDs.

Use Disk Utility. Tell it to zero the drive with at least one pass. Done.

Spyware and such cannot be stored in the firmware. Besides there not being enough room to do so, sanity checks (CRC etc) prevent it. The firmware has more important things to do - like running the computer.

Just ERASE the HD.
