If you're both on the same network segment, you could do some packet sniffing - watch for when the throw rate gets high. I've seen a number of commercial (expensive) packages that will do this. Haven't noticed any free/inexpensive ones tho.
Some routers will let you set a quality of service - so you could de-prioritize yourself.
With what application are you downloading? Some include bandwidth chokes, eg: most bittorrent clients.
Is this an actual problem that you're seeing, or are you just trying to be nice to her in advance?
