would this make Safari so slow to open and sometimes time out spinning its wheels??
Not really. The memory leaks we're discussing here accumulate as you use Safari. They shouldn't affect it when first launched.
Safari should start up pretty quick, +/- the load time of whatever default home page you're using.
If you have installed some plug-in or inputmanager that makes it open a whole bunch of windows or tabs ... look to those.
If it's beachballing beyond that,,, look to the basics: not enough ram available in the first place (so the system has to first clear some), not enough free disk space available for the caches, very large caches, large cookie or website icon databases, large bookmarks menu list, etc.
Clearing the caches and such can be addressed by ticking the right items in the Reset Safari dialog.
I hate clearing cookies. It's such a PITA to have to re-signin to web sites! But wow - I find the speed difference is quite noticeable.
The bookmarks bog can be very annoying. The problem has two sides: If there are more items than can be displayed in the Bookmarks Bar, then Safari slows. And if the Bookmarks Menu list is very long, then Safari slows even more. The size of the other folders in the bookmarks list doesn't seem to matter after the list is initially parsed (loaded). So really, organization is the key here.
