This also implies both iMac and iBook have aircards. I leave my computers running 24/7 if they aren't actually being used the power is minimal.

The iMac is in this case acting as the router for the local network. Routers usually use less power than an iMac will when left powered on 24/7. (I pay around 16 cents a KWH so how much electricity I use is a concern for me.
