We have one of these models around, and I seem to recall the red light, too. 
When I get back to work on Monday (if I remember! :-) I'll ask the owner if it 
makes a lot of noise at startup...I don't recall it myself...

There are a bunch of temperature monitoring apps out there; get one and see 
what it says. If the fans are not working properly it'll run very hot. Given 
that it 'Works like a champ' I suspect this is normal.
