It can be? I can't say I've ever had a problem with Firewire other than intermittent flakiness on the Cube. I use ultra cheap cables with various devices all the time, and I've yet to ever have a problem. The only machine I've got with "issues" is my Sawtooth. It had an unfortunate accident with an external hard drive that had a worn out plug. A bit hard to determine the correct way to plug the plug in, and well........oops! I can use one port at a time, but not both simultaneously. The internal port doesn't seem to be affected, only the ports on the back.
