Well a cheap way to fix this problem then would be a reinstall of the system with my universal install disks. Wouldn't that disk choose the correct icon for the installation or is the icon on the MOBO ROM??

Yes, I believe a reinstallation would solve the icon problem, but that's like shooting a gnat with an atomic bomb. In earlier versions of OS X all installations with a retail installer disc were identical no matter what Mac model you were using. Starting in Tiger or Leopard the installer started locking the installation together with the model of Mac used for installation. This was a really minor thing, and AFAIK the installed system still behaved identically as before, but now the model of the Mac and the serial # of the Mac were placed into a file (I assume a binary info.plist that's not easy to locate or edit) so that the About This Mac and some associated icons custom to the specific model are permanently fixed at installation. I assume Apple did this because they wanted to identify unauthorized installations, and a mismatch between the installed System and the actual Mac would allow them differentiate legitimate installations from others? I found this to be bothersome when working on older Unsupported Macs. If I used a supported Mac to make the installation, the model, serial #, and certain icons would be those of the Mac I installed with, rather than the Mac I was using the System with. I assume is your problem?
