You explained it clearly.

The problem is your settings in CCC. CCC can create *two* types of backups. The first is an exact bootable clone of the source. The second is a sparse disk image - a type of DMG file, a virtual disk. It is the second type that you created. That's not what you want.

In CCC... Select your source volume. Verify that everything in the source volume is selected. Then select your destination volume as a disk, NOT an image. Check the "delete" box, so that your destination will end up being an exact copy of the source.
