Jonas this is not helpful in answering the OP's question.

To a layperson such as myself it does sound like a video card issue, but I would hesitate to replace it without further investigation. If it has two DVI ports have you tried using the other port? Or maybe try her video card in your PM to see if it behaves the same for you? Remove the card and safely clean the pins and the slot? Does it do the same thing if you connect your display to her card?

Trying all possible options is a good way to narrow down possible causes.

If you do end up replacing it I have heard that the Radeon X800 XT Mac edition is a better card than even my BTO card (below). Whether it is still available is a different issue.
