Dual boot between OSX and Ubuntu by installing Ubuntu on a separate volume (either partition your single drive or add a second drive). Then when you start the mac, hold the Option key down and you will get a window showing icons for all viable system equipped volumes. Choose Mac or Ubuntu and you're set.
