I tried reformatting the drive with Disk Utility and I get an error.

What's the error? Do the Console logs show anything?

Any suggestions?

You wife's Intel iMac may be able to boot the Maxtor drive utility CD? (or Seagate SeaTools for DOS CD, since Seagate has subsumed Maxtor). These CDs have better utilities for low-level testing and formating. I've had drives that checked out good in Disk Utility, but were freezing and causing problems, check out faulty using a real utility from the drive manufacturer. If your wife's Intel iMac won't boot the SeaTools CD, you'll need a PC. I suspect the drive is likely bad, but I would write it off until SeaTools said it's bad.
