Now when I connect the drive using USB Disk Utility does not see it at
all.

It also causes the log to keep repeating this message even after the
drive is turned off, the result being that I cannot shut down the
computer.

I downloaded and burned the Seagate utility and will try it later but
I believe that the drive is bad.
I thought that I had a 5 year warranty on this drive but I went to the
Seagate site and I get an error when I try to check the warranty
status. I Emailed them but they are not replying.
